Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy applies to the Website and Mobile Application (“Services”) operated by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Maldives (“PGO”).

It is a priority of the PGO to ensure confidentiality and protection of user identifiable data (“Personal Data”). Accordingly, this Privacy Policy outlines how PGO collects, uses, protects, or otherwise handles Personal Data of users in connection with the Services.

For the purpose of this Privacy Policy, “Website” refers to the website located at pgoffice.gov.mv and any other PGO-owned website links therein, and “Mobile Application” refers to the Lethun app.

Collection of Information

In order to provide the Services efficiently and productively, PGO collects various types of Personal Data through the Website and Mobile Application. Information is collected in the following ways:

Information Provided by Users:

The users are not obligated to provide any Personal Data and can view or use limited Services without providing any such data. However, PGO will not bear any responsibility to provide complete Services, such as account creation or access to restricted case files, appeals, and specific features, wherein users fail to provide required Personal Data.

Information Collected from Third Parties:

In order to compare, validate, and authenticate Personal Data provided by users, PGO reserves the right to share and collect various information from third parties at its sole discretion. These include but are not limited to identity validation from governmental departments, digital identity platforms (such as eFaas), and the Department of National Registration.

Information Collected Automatically:

The Website and Mobile Application collect non-personal and system usage data automatically using Log Data, Cookies, and other similar technologies. These data enable provision of Services effectively, monitoring of system performance, and security verification. Such data includes but is not limited to device information, browser type, operating system, IP address, session details, and successful/unsuccessful authentication attempts.

Log Data:

Log Data may include information such as Internet Protocol address, browser version, visited pages, time and date of the visit, time spent on pages, and other system interaction statistics.

Cookies:

Cookies are files with a small amount of data that are commonly used as an anonymous unique identifier sent to the browser of users. The users have the option to either accept or refuse cookies. Refusal of cookies may limit the use of Services.

Biometric Information:

Biometric functions (such as fingerprint or facial recognition) used to unlock the Mobile Application on a user's device are processed exclusively on the device itself. PGO does not collect, record, or store this biometric data. Any biometric matching required for high-level authentication is processed securely via eFaas Multi-factor Authentication and remains subject to the retention policies of the Maldives Digital Service.

Use of Collected Information

PGO will only use collected Personal Data in accordance with this Privacy Policy to provide and maintain the Services, authenticate user identities, manage access to PGO resources, compile de-identified statistical reports, respond to security risks, or perform tasks incidental to providing the Services.

Personal Data provided by users which are not published on the Services may be shared with third parties with the consent of users. PGO will demand from such third parties to ensure the confidentiality of shared Personal Data. However, PGO shall not be liable for any breach of confidentiality due to acts, omissions, or negligence of such third parties.

PGO will not release or disclose any Personal Data in a manner contravening this Privacy Policy or for direct marketing purposes, unless explicit consent is provided or it is required or authorized to do so under applicable laws of the Republic of Maldives or by an order of a court or tribunal.

Protection of Collected Information

PGO has installed reasonable organizational, technical, and administrative mechanisms for preventing unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure, or destruction of stored Personal Data. At all times, PGO will strive reasonably to protect and ensure the security of confidential Personal Data.

Personal Data which are published on the Services as per applicable laws and regulations will not be confidential and PGO will have no obligation to protect such published data. Furthermore, unsolicited information provided by the users through various channels including the Services will not be treated as confidential information.

Additionally, PGO shall not bear any responsibility towards breach of Personal Data due to actions beyond the reasonable control of PGO. PGO also does not bear any confidentiality obligation towards the use of third-party links provided in the Services.

Access and Correction of Personal Data

Users may access and update their Personal Data via the account dashboard within the Services or by contacting PGO directly. PGO will take reasonable steps to ensure that maintained Personal Data remains accurate, complete, relevant, and up to date.

Amendment of the Privacy Policy

PGO reserves the right to amend, revise, update, modify, add, or remove any provisions of this Privacy Policy at any time, in a manner which is not contradictory with the essence of protecting and maintaining confidentiality.

Additionally, PGO shall publicly list or inform users of any changes by publishing the updated Privacy Policy on the Services, updating the "Last Updated" date, or providing notification via email or prominent notice prior to changes taking effect.
